Typically, when I reach out to a band/press contact to ask for a press copy of an upcoming album, I either don’t hear back or get the run-around. When I reached out to Galleons, though, I was immediately sent a copy of their new album Metropolis, no questions asked. This was a joy, as I have come to enjoy the band after my friend sent me their cover of Tyler, the Creator’s “Earfquake”. Thus, receiving this album is a treat and a privilege!

Galleons is a hidden gem of a band. With a bit of a lower profile/play count than the majority of bands I cover, they are  a case of an act that is bursting with talent that hasn’t burst through to the mainstream just yet. While they have released five tracks from Metropolis already, the album stretches to 15 whole songs, truly a delight over the typical 10 song length in most albums. This long track list is enjoyable, as there is no filler present on Metropolis, with plenty of standout moments.

Metropolis opens off strong, with three singles, “Elsewhere”, “Cybersex”, and “Gentle Dizzy” playing one after the other following the delightful opening track “New Horizons”. Galleons’ signature sound is characterized by complex riffs, soulful vocal delivery over passionate lyrics, and ample experimentation with instruments in their songs, including saxophone, synth, etc. More than just a catchy chorus, every second of a Galleons track rewards an attentive listener with layers of skillful, well-crafted music. This is progressive post-hardcore at its absolute best.

While the band is not particularly derivative, “Artificial Species” emanates serious Dance Gavin Dance vibes, with vicious unclean vocals overlapping a funky guitar line. “Lemonade” is also the name of a track from another similar band, Dwellings, but each song is vibrant in its own way, with Galleons’ version being an unapologetic track with Robin Hood-esque lyrical content. This consistency is seen across the rest of the album. It was a welcome surprise, as I’m used to some songs dragging or not being as good as others, but that is certainly not the case here, even without interludes/segues.

I cannot get enough of Metropolis. This is one of the rare cases where, after just one listen, I fall in love with an album. The year is just starting, but I am already putting Metropolis at the top of my albums of the year list, as I can tell there will be deep replayability. There have been so many times where I’m impressed by a song I discover, only to leave it to the wayside as I go back to one of my mainstay albums; Metropolis is already sure to be a mainstay, as I want to listen to tracks like “Gentle Dizzy” and “Bellavista” on repeat, and will go out of my way to put this whole album on repeat.

Galleons’ Metropolis is completely out-of-this-world. It is truly a unique album, and I cannot believe that this band is not at the forefront of the scene. It’s not every day that a band like Galleons graces my ears, and let this article be a call to action for you to give it a try! It has a little something for everyone, and is sure to deviate from your expectations, as my words cannot do it justice. Let me know what your thoughts on Galleons’ new album is when it releases this Friday, January 24th!
