When covering something as specific as one company or a select couple of games, it is best to have at least some knowledge of them. I can honestly say, I’ve played all of two games by PlatinumGames and that’s being generous with the case of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Yes, a crazy game about cyborg ninjas slicing up a massive metal dinosaur wasn’t my thing, oddly enough. Bayonetta was alright though; given Alexx’s opinions on the series, I’ll be sliced up by a cyborg ninja in a minute so I’ll try to make this quick.

Yesterday it was announced that PlatinumGames Inc, the Bayonetta and NieR: Automata developer, has received a capital investment to start self-publishing games soon. The issue, given recent events and public opinion, the investment might cause some concern for those looking forward to some PlatinumGames.

We would like to announce we have received a capital investment from Tencent Holdings Limited as a basis for partnership. This partnership has no effect on the independence of our company, and we will continue operations under our current corporate structure,” said president and CEO, Kenichi Sato, in a press release.

He went on to state, “We hope to use this capital to strengthen our foundation as a business and expand from game development into exploring self-publishing. We also hope that this partnership can give us a wider global perspective, while still creating high-quality games that stay true to our name.” Suggesting that the company is wholly free to do as they please, it is just an investment to continue the work and expand.

The company is still completely autonomous from Tencent Holdings as a business, and the financing is in no way to purchase a portion of the developer. However, as is the case with many online right now, there may be some backlash towards the company due to the business dealing. As has been the case for those speaking about the likes of Epic Games in any light other than negative will see phrases like “Chinese spyware!” or other bile get mentioned. An entirely unsupported conspiracy pushing an anti-Chinese fallacy. This, like any other capital investment between companies, is just money switching hands to promote business.
