Making games is hard, as much as I tend to kick games left right and center when I review them, I know making them isn’t always easy. Some are easier than others, but to get something that looks, feels, and plays well is the issue. That’s not even mentioning the writing that goes into some games. That’s why Cory Barlog and his team at Santa Monica studios had to have used some form of black magic on God of War (2018). However, we’re not here to talk about the games with a budget the size of Yorkshire, we’re here to talk indie.
Now I’ve previously spoken about Inkle Studios before, mostly because of their success with their recent game Heaven’s Vault. A beautiful sci-fi game about puzzles, adventure, and putting together pieces of different languages to form and understand a sentence. If the lead was a very buxom white woman with two handguns I’d have mistaken that description is one of my favorite Tomb Raider concepts; alas, set pieces and daddy issues are in. If what I’ve heard of Heaven’s Vault is all true it does sound like a very interesting game entirely.
Now, less than a year on from the release of their last game, Inkle Studios are teasing the release of yet another game. At least it seems that way. With only several words to highlight its setting, themes, and desires, I’m intrigued. “Swords, Anguish, Britain, Unrequited, Forests, Hope, and Revenge,” It all sounds like an emotional weekend in South-end on Sea. Though in the tweet (as seen below) they do say this game announcement, and possible game, is coming this year of all things.
Most studios, teasing the announcement of a new game coming this year, would post a cute GIF.
Here are seven words instead.
Swords
Anguish
Britain
Unrequited
Forests
Hope
Revenge— inkle (@inkleStudios) January 6, 2020
After playing the studio’s second title, 80 Days, I trust the team over at Inkle Studios to get a great story across. However, I could see this one being questioned by some after a slight comment by the studio’s Twitter account. When asked if the game “is [it] about Brexit?” whoever runs the studio’s Twitter account said, “definitely channeling our rage.” Given some on all sides of the political spectrums throw a fit at the slightest hint of political meaning in entertainment, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone runs with it.
Though when you take the first letter of each word, it does create “SABUFHR.” No, I didn’t have a stroke halfway through that, it makes as little sense as it is supposed to. Nevertheless, the studio has said this is the name of a small jellyfish.
