With 2020 just beginning, those of us at Phenixx Gaming decided it would be a great idea, to shine a spotlight on a few upcoming games that you may have forgotten about. Alternately, if you haven’t forgotten about them, this series will bring you up to speed on the latest developments about said releases. The topic of this article (as you can tell by the title) is Bayonetta 3 and, sadly, this one is probably going to be fairly short.

The folks here at Phenixx Gaming are well aware of the fact that I regard the Bayonetta franchise as one of the greatest action franchises in gaming history. Extending that thought though, I find that PlatinumGames themselves, and folks from Clover Studios who ultimately joined to make PlatinumGames are some of the most fun developers I’ve encountered.

Because of this, I have been very excited about Bayonetta 3 since it was announced at the 2017 Game Awards. However, since the teaser that was revealed two years ago, we’ve gotten very little information on the game. The most recent bit of news we’ve been given was a statement by PlatinumGames member Atsushi Inaba.

No, development is actually going quite well,” Inaba told VGC back in June of this year.  “Games aren’t usually done in a year or two… it takes a while. That’s all. Things are going well and I know a lot of people are asking for it.” He also spoke about the absence of Bayonetta 3 at E3 2019 stating, “Giving updates for everything at E3 isn’t the smartest PR strategy, to begin with. So just because we’re not showing it here doesn’t mean it’s not going well.”

Currently all we know about Bayonetta 3 is that it is going to be a Nintendo Switch exclusive, and that it will likely star the franchise’s titular heroine. Hideki Kamiya also mentioned previously that Jeanne, Bayonetta’s fellow witch, may receive a new hairstyle in this game, similar to how Bayonetta’s style changed from Bayonetta 1 to Bayonetta 2.

There are a few opportunities to get updates on Bayonetta 3’s development in 2020, either via Nintendo Direct, E3 2020, or some other announcement by the developer themselves. I’m hoping we’ll hear something before long, even if it is just a slightly longer trailer that shows us something tangible. We know it isn’t in development hell, and it hasn’t been put off, so that is a good sign.

With that being said, it was announced before Babylon’s Fall and we’ve seen more about Babylon’s Fall than we have Bayonetta 3, so for a fan, it is somewhat frustrating.
