The year 2020 is not just the beginning of a new decade but also a start to a new generation of consoles and games. So I’ve decided to use what little free time I have left to gush about some of the games I’m most excited to see in the new year.
The first game on this list is quite a game. In fact, to some, it is THE game and that’s the Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Final Fantasy 7 is one of the most influential and popular games to date. You won’t meet an avid gamer that doesn’t know the name, and next year we will graciously receive an updated, enhanced, and modern version of the game.
It’s currently advertised as the first part of a series and is meant to be a re-imagination of the game as a whole. We can see from the demo trailers that many of the primary essential story arcs, locations, and famous battles in the opening area of Midgar seem to be the same. Everything else has a more modern flair to it, including the addition of real-time combat that will undoubtedly bring in more players to the game.
Square Enix also claims the remake will feature new characters and events not seen in the original, including new subplots to the established story. With the legacy the remake has to live up to, I cant wait to see how Square Enix handles this gem of a game come 2020.
The next game on this list is The Last Of us Part 2, Naughty Dog’s follow-up to its critically acclaimed and beloved post-apocalyptic survival game that has touched fans of the original game, and other PlayStation users, including myself. The original follows our protagonist Joel amidst an apocalypse caused by a virus. He’s tasked with protecting a young girl named Ellie, who could very well save the world as she is immune to the virus herself.
After the events of the original game, the sequel follows an adult Ellie who’s become a capable fighter over the years. After something horrible happens to her love interest, Dina, she seeks to find those responsible.
The game boasts improved graphics and gameplay enhancements, as well as the bow and rapid crafting system shown in the gameplay trailer. In the latest trailer shown during the December 2019 State of Play event, it’s revealed Joel will be joining us yet again. The game also seems much darker and grittier than the original, and I look forward to seeing how Naughty Dog will tug at our heartstrings this time.
Those aware of my tastes in gaming already know what my most anticipated game of the next year is, and that’s Elden Ring. Ooooooh how I am excited for Elden Ring. Let me just say, we’ve barely been given any information on this title, and that, coupled with the fantastic and hype inducing trailer, further drives my lust to see more of this game. Ever since Demon Souls back in 2009 and the groundbreaking game Dark Souls back in 2011, Fromsoftware has established itself as the king of tough but fair and satisfying games. Elden Ring hopes to be another masterpiece of theirs in the making.
What little we know from the trailer, debuted earlier this year at E3, suggests a conflict of some kind in the world of Elden Ring as someone or something has destroyed the said ring. The game seeks to bring new elements to the narrative, while also seemingly sticking to its roots for storytelling. With the surprising involvement of famous Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin to collaborate on the lore (which is reported to be based on Norse mythology) and world-building, Elden Ring is to be Fromsoft’s biggest title yet.
The trailer alone is enough to get excited over. Now all that’s left is to wait for at least a gameplay trailer to see how well the gameplay mechanics and combat fit into the narrative influences. Perhaps it’ll take inspiration from the LOTR movies. Perhaps not. Perhaps it’ll be more like the previous games in Fromsoft’s library or maybe it’ll take a completely different direction. All we can do for now is imagine the potential of Elden Ring, and even then, I doubt we could even imagine it.
These are just a few of the games I’m excited to play next year. 2020 has a whole lot of amazing games in store for us, and I hope we all have time to play and appreciate them all when the time comes.
