It is nigh impossible to scroll through a social media feed at any given point and not see a meme of some sort. The definition of meme is somewhat vague, as it could mean any viral piece of media deriving from a social media site; but I think that most people that are in the loop will acknowledge modern memes have evolved into trending joke formats on the internet, far from the “top/bottom text image macros” that frequented feeds at the start of the decade.

As the admin of one of Facebook’s larger meme pages, “Cartoon Frames”, I feel that I must pay tribute to a meme that A. never got old, B. still has tons of potential, and C. is just good for a laugh no matter your mood. “Bee Movie But” is a format of YouTube video where Bee Movie was modified to fit certain conditions. The alleged pioneer of the meme is YouTube user wankerflaps’ “bee movie but it keeps getting faster”, which has, unfortunately, been taken down by a copyright claim from Dreamworks. The funny thing is, some of these videos fly under the radar of Dreamworks, because their modifications are so obtuse that the sensors cannot detect the movie. As such, in 2019, most examples of this are delegated to the trailer.

Some of my favorite examples of this meme are “the bee movie trailer but the bees are thicc”, “the bee movie trailer but every time they say bee, a sh***y Bee Movie bootleg plays instead”, and “The bee movie but every time they say bee it gets faster”. There is so much potential with this meme, only limited by imagination and Dreamworks suppressing a quality meme. The heyday of this meme has passed, but I have fond memories of laughing heartily at the wide variety in 2016-2017.

What makes this beat the other memes is that it has transcended into several other movies/pieces of media. This includes “The Cars movie but without cars”, “Star Wars prequels but anakin always dies”, “Shrek but the ENTIRE MOVIE is converted to MIDI”. Like I said, limitless potential here, always good for pure hilarity. While most memes come and get beaten to death, this one persists and remains one of my favorite of all time.
