Dream-pop has seen a huge surge in popularity during this decade. How fitting it is that I ended up discovering yet another terrific example of it at the turn of the decade. Thanks to an Audiotree Facebook post that lasted a matter of 30 seconds, I was instantly hooked and had to hear more of the band. The fantastic use of reverb that is all too familiar in the shoegaze/dream-pop genres creates a scene of mystique, and I can’t get enough of it.
Blushing’s Blushing starts off with a quiet, soft-open in “So Many”. The meticulous, slow pace of the song establishes a serene, calm atmosphere to put the listener at ease. The down-toned vocals fit in perfectly, as the song does not escalate until 2 minutes and 35 seconds in, maintaining the slow bpm, but bringing in the drums and amps to a powerful climax. The payoff of this song gave me a high opinion of it from the get-go.
What is compelling about the band is that it is comprised of two couples; a similar case to this was the popular Silversun Pickups, who originally almost went by “A Couple of Couples”. This dynamic works with the album’s upbeat and happy-go-lucky tone. Crafting these magical songs is supplemented with the deep connection shared between these band members.
The vibe given off of these tracks never misses a beat. There is ample variety between each song, so it doesn’t just sound like one long, droney drudge. Thanks to the switch from smoothed-out/deliberate tracks to poppy/jumpy songs, the listener is treated to a strong assortment to enjoy. Vocals can range from soaring in “Sunshine” to a nice melody in “The Truth”. Variety is the spice of life and, in Blushing’s case, music.
With sound song structure and no one instrument prevailing over another, the composition of Blushing is wholly satisfying. This is benefitted by great production from Elliott Frazier of the Ringo Deathstarr, who likely helped to inspire this first effort from Blushing. The band also saw initial success landing consecutive years at the South By So What Festival in Texas. Getting on one of the biggest fests in the country is a great platform for a band to get their career kickstarted.
In the closing of the band’s Facebook “Our Story” section, they denote that they are “seeking label support”. After dropping this incredible first album, I urge any label looking for a breakout artist to elevate Blushing to the mainstream. Some potential labels for the band to have an outlet could be Run For Cover Records, Topshelf Records, or even the esteemed Hopeless Records.
There is not a doubt in my mind that this band could reach the heights of similar acts like Turnover, Gleemer, Hundredth, etc. A band with a dedicated work ethic married to raw talent can make for an act that enters thousands upon thousands of ears, and Blushing’s self-titled record should put them on the map with no trouble at all. Experience this record now to see what all the fuss is about!
