Degica Games is a Tokyo-based publisher that’s mainly known for being the international publisher of the RPG Maker line of game engines as well as various CAVE shmups like Mushihimesama. Besides bringing Japanese games and engines abroad and publishing some western games such as Darkest Dungeon in Japanese, Degica Games has also attempted to publish notable RPG Maker games such as OneShot for commercial release; it’s as if to say, “here’s what this engine can do.” Though it ended up leaving its RPG Maker origins, Virgo Versus the Zodiac was still published by Degica Games and the company is holding a sale across much of their merchandise to celebrate.

In Virgo Versus the Zodiac, you play as Virgo, the villain protagonist of the game. As the queen of Purity, she’s on a quest to bring about what she believes to be a Golden Age of peace, which means dethroning the Zodiacs that rule the world. As the name indicates, the game is very influenced by the Zodiac archetypes, to the point that it affects gameplay. In an interview with RPG Maker Web, creator Moonana said that “I wanted the player to feel like a Virgo, and think like one, preparing beforehand for their troubles and being tactful.”

The gameplay of Virgo Versus the Zodiac requires players to be more careful and strategic, as instead of lots of random encounters, there are a few, carefully designed encounters that requires tactical thinking. Thinking must also be swift, as the game relies on an action-command system reminiscent of the Mario & Luigi games.
