Gamechangers Campaign To Entice Voting In UK Election

Voting is a problematic sport, the turnout is terrible, the apathy is at an all-time high, and general trust is at an all-time low in many places. It is hard to tell you why you should go out and vote, especially if you have your reasons. Some I know don’t sign up because of political asylum reasons, others just don’t like their paltry selection of candidates and don’t care. I can understand that, however, that doesn’t mean I agree with it.

Personally, I think if you want to complain about the state of the political landscape, you have to have voted in the first place. At least then, when you’ve been able to have your official chance to change things with a piece of democracy, you can continue that with a bit more. However, young people have this strong indifference towards voting as with a lack of numbers they view older voters (in greater numbers) an unclimbable hill. So, how do we change that?

Well, for many, the idea of getting something is a good enough promise to get out and vote. In Australia alone, there is this thing called the “democracy sausage,” which builds from the 20th-century idea of cake sales outside polling stations. It is a win-win situation as those that are already going vote get their sausage or cake, and others will turn up for the sausage, but need to vote to get one. Also, it is required by law that you vote in Australia after the age of 18. A brilliant idea, that needs to be brought into the 21st-century and has by Elle Osili-Wood; presenter, voice actor, and interviewer.

As part of the 2019 UK general election taking place on the 12th of December, Elle is promoting voting on social media with a giveaway. “#GamechangersGiveaway,” is a competition that is offering 200 games to be won, Magic the Gather kids, a Cyberpunk 2077 jacket, A £50 voucher to Insert coin Tees, and more. Many of the games included in the giveaway are The Walking Dead, The Sinking City, Crash Team Racing, AI: The Somnium Files, Ancestors, Trine 4, and a lot more. Think of it as a longer-lasting democracy sausage, but you can’t eat it.

To enter you are best to start reading through the terms and conditions of the giveaway. The general run down goes as follows, you must be of the age of voting, you must have voted, to enter you must provide a photo of yourself (a “selfie”) outside your polling station, and you will be disqualified for posting a photo of your ballot paper. All entrants must tag @elleosiliwood and #GamechangersGiveaway in their post. If entrants post general hate speech, homophobia, transphobia, racist, or sexist remarks across their social media accounts, they will be disqualified.
