Nier is a relatively new Square Enix franchise that really hit big with the 2017 release of Nier: Automata. A spin-off of Yoko Taro’s lesser-known Drakengard series, the Nier series brings a tragic fever dream through post-apocalyptic worlds that really captures the imagination. Now, it looks like Square Enix is going to honor the series’ 10th anniversary.
The 10th anniversary site is currently barebones at the moment, simply offering a grinning Emil face within the 10th anniversary logo. Additionally, the logo and face are on top of what looks like the field from the first Nier as a backdrop, with a piano version of its theme playing. There are also links to merchandise, Nier: Automata, Nier: Gestalt, and Nier: Replicant offered at the bottom. For international readers not in the know, Nier: Gestalt was the version of the game released internationally starring the father Nier while Replicant starred a teenaged Nier and was only released in Japan.
Nier is currently being celebrated in a different way with a series of orchestral concerts being held around the world, with a Los Angeles and an extra Chicago concert being added on in response to demand. The concerts will include music from both games while accompanying HD scenes plays out. It’s important to note though, that the HD scenes of the first Nier will be from the Replicant version, which seems to be held as the “canon” version of the game.
Additionally, a few weeks ago the YoRHa Boys side novel was announced for localization, which introduces more lore to Automata‘s world. While it’s already technically been out, its localization coincides nicely with the anniversary.
With the appearance of the 10th anniversary site, you may ask: what will this be setting up for? With how the site’s playing music from the first Nier and more focus being put toward that game, I can only hope for a remaster of the first game. For now, it’s something to keep your eyes on.
