The GameMaker line of engines, by YoYo Games, is one of the more well-known game engines for developers. Aimed at making 2D games, GameMaker’s been an accessible tool for developers for years, up to the 2017 release of GameMaker Studio 2. Tomorrow, GameMaker is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

GameMaker powered many hit indie games in the past decade or so. Platforming roguelike sensation Spelunky? That’s GameMaker. Ultraviolent top-down shooter Hotline Miami? That’s GameMaker. Sensational indie RPG Undertale? Yep, GameMaker too. From amateur devs playing around with code and the engine’s drag-and-drop features to the professional hits, GameMaker has proven to be an accessible engine with a rich 20-year history.

It’s a very important milestone for the engine, which has continued to lead the field in 2D game design, offering creators the most powerful and user-friendly 2D game development environment in the industry. We are so proud of what GameMaker has achieved thus far and even more excited about its future,” Stuart Poole, YoYo Games’ General Manager, said in a press release.

Of course, a big milestone anniversary is nothing without a celebration. So tomorrow, November 15th, there will be a special one-day sale on the GameMaker line. That is a good chance to grab the engine for cheaper. Also, currently ongoing until the 21st is the GameMaker 20 Jam. Anyone that enters the game jam can get a temporary license for GameMaker Studio 2 that will last the duration of the jam. Participants are to honor the number 20 in their entries, be it the game only having 20 lines of code to running in a 20×20 resolution.

Also announced in the press release are some details on the engine’s upcoming 2.3 update. This update will introduce Sequences, which aims to provide developers an easy way to create cutscenes and other complex scenes. This feature is expected to go into beta before the end of the year, with a proper launch planned in Spring 2020. GameMaker is an engine that’s helped create a lot, and it’s an engine that will continue to make creating easier.
