As of Wednesday, SNK mainstay Terry Bogard has joined the cast of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Previously revealed in a September 4th Nintendo Direct, Terry was met with a bunch of skepticism from people that never played an SNK fighter. Then again, these are the same people that want Geno, so what do they know?
It felt that Smash director Masahiro Sakurai was directly addressing fans that were confused on what Terry is all about in his accompanying showcase. The showcase was announced to be 45 minutes, which left a lot of people speculating that there’d be more to it besides Terry due to its unusually long length. He ended up surprising everyone by giving an in-depth intro on SNK and Neo Geo, the console that SNK thrived on. Sakurai also flexed his Terry skills by doing a playthrough of his classic mode, where all fights are stamina battles, ending with a perfect 9.9 rating. Needless to say, it’s hard for people to walk away from the presentation without a good idea on what Terry’s about.
Terry shares similar ideas with Ryu, a fellow traditional fighting game character. His special attacks are stronger when you hold down the special attack button, but you can also do strong variants of those attacks if you input corresponding commands in line with his original games. However, Terry can also use super special versions of those moves when he’s above 100% and by doing special input commands, making for high-risk, high-reward play.
The stage that comes with Terry is the King of Fighters Stadium, a small flat stage meant to be more in line with traditional fighting games. Invisible walls to the sides block people from getting knocked off stage; however, if a character is hit through the wall with enough damage, they break through and get instantly KO’d. In the background, there’s some more fan service with a bunch of King of Fighters characters showing up to just kinda vibe.
The game’s love for Terry Bogard continued with the added music. The previous DLC fighters were welcomed to the fight with a mix of original songs and remixes, but none of them got as much love as Terry, with the whopping 50 songs added to the game. Fatal Fury and King of Fighters music was expected with the update, but Sakurai’s music choices goes beyond by including other SNK franchises like Samurai Shodown and Metal Slug.
Of course, there’s also a bunch of new SNK themed spirits to fight against in Spirits Mode now. Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown, Ryo Sakazaki from Art of Fighting, Iori Yagami from King of Fighters and Akira and Jacky from Virtua Fighter also joins the fight via Mii Costumes. Lastly, Simon, Chrom and Incineroar amiibos were announced to come out on Nov. 15.
