Funko is a toy company that is essentially this generation’s Beanie Babies. The company started off making bobbleheads, and then eventually moved on to their popular Funko Pop! figures. These collectibles feature dark, round eyes, and a cartoonish take on pop culture icons. Everyone from Darth Vader to the Tootsie Pop Owl has their own figure. More and more brands are lending their characters to Funko for figures, but sales figures for the past quarter have some shareholders feeling nervous about the future of the company.

Funko is expanding in some pretty impressive ways. They’re opening headquarters, which are essentially offices with special Funko shops on the ground floor, in new cities. They’re working with major IPs like Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Marvel in big ways; essentially every new movie turns into at least 4 or 5 Pop! figures. The sales figures are what is troubling the company. Earnings for the third quarter of 2019 fell short of estimates, leading to a 15% drop in shares. Analysts are still saying the stock is strong, and when things go low like this, it’s usually safe to say traders will buy with the hopes of a rise in the future.

The company’s top-selling figures as of late are Fortnite and Harry Potter figures. Surprisingly, Marvel has been relatively missing from the top earners’ category since the release of Endgame, despite new figures celebrating the comic company’s 80th birthday. The question becomes whether or not the figures are at their critical mass or not. The concept is a business term, relating to the point at which something is so well known it is sort of plateauing. It happens to every popular product; iPods, laptops, and even certain types of cars.

If you’re into the stock market, it might be a good time to buy stock in FNKO, as it’s known on the trading block. Needless to say, collectors still love the figures. Full disclosure, my wife and I own a ton of them. I think we’re at a point where the Pop! train is slowing, but far from finished. We’ll keep an eye on things at Funko as they play out!
