BlizzCon happened last weekend, and despite worries about protests in retaliation toward the Blitzchung incident, it mostly went off without a hitch. One of the biggest reveals of the convention which was leaked beforehand is Overwatch 2, a PvE focused sequel.
Referring back to my thoughts on Overwatch in general, I’m going to have to eat crow on some things. I previously said that Overwatch‘s story didn’t seem to be going anywhere. Well, I’m technically right in that the first Overwatch‘s story isn’t going anywhere. Instead, the story’s finally kicking off in the sequel. The titular Overwatch is back in action, fighting against the likes of Null Sector and Talon in four player cooperative missions. Overwatch 2 seems to build off of the PvE limited time events in the original game, introducing consumable items and skill trees to customize characters for this new story mode.
What if you don’t care about the PvE stuff? Well, all the new PvP content in Overwatch 2 (a tug-of-war game mode and some new maps) will be shared with the original game, allowing owners of both to play together. As somebody that came to like the limited-time PvE modes more than the PvP, this stuff appeals to me. However, I imagine that Overwatch 2 will be a tough sell for people that don’t care, since you don’t need to buy it for the new PvP stuff.
All this also left me wondering: why is this a sequel? It feels that all the new PvE focused stuff could just be an expansion to the original game, much like how Splatoon 2‘s Octo Expansion provided an expanded single player mode.
Why the fuck are people cheering for this?
This is not an apology. Once again, just like in the original statement Blizzard made, they're not apologizing for punishing Blitzchung, they're apologizing for "moving too quickly," and taking too long to make an official statement. https://t.co/lleT6cCUpM

Anyway, none of this matters because Blizzard did not properly address its actions. The president of Blizzard made a vague apology that was more about the company acting brash than the actions it actually did. I can’t believe some people accepted this apology. I can’t believe most of the people that went “Free Hong Kong” a week ago are now excited for Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV or whatever. Do those people truly believe in anything?
Well, in a world where the Blitzchung stuff didn’t happen, I’d be somewhat interested in Overwatch 2. It’s addressing some of the problems I had and is focusing on something that I liked. Though, I still think it should be an expansion instead of a sequel that presumably asks you to pay a full game price.
