As you may have heard, Blizzard are kind of trying to dig themselves out of a hole, a big one at that. As Dari wrote about recently, the company placed a league suspension on a Hearthstone player known as Blitzchung. This came off the back of many others being fairly vocal about the protests between the Chinese government and the people of Hong Kong. Following Blitzchung’s suspension, a social media campaign begun with, “#BoycottBlizzard” putting Blizzard in a tricky spot with fans.
Following this, the company’s hugely successful 2016 game, Overwatch, released on the Nintendo Switch. In New York, there was meant to be some kind of event that would be promoting the game and possibly leading to the sale of some Switches from the New York Nintendo Store. However, the company cancelled days before the event without giving a proper reason. One assumes that the company possibly had concerns over protests in the center of New York. If this was the concern, the company must be having a field day with the build-up to Blizzcon 2019 this weekend.
However, according to Rod Breslau for ESPN, the company may be looking to pull what Fortnite did, but without the spike in porn searches. As reported first by Jason Schreier of Kotaku back in June, the company is working on a PvE version of the game, touted as Overwatch 2. Breslau seemed to have further sources than Schreier, going so far as to detail what will be shown this weekend at the convention.
According to the people over at wowhead.com, who are heavily reporting on this, they have found a piece of key art for the Overwatch section of the Blizzard gear store. Suspected to be released at around the announcement of the speculated Overwatch 2, it features the highly rumored hero Echo. However, it was Rod Breslau who stated that Echo may be the 32nd hero in the game, though he later deleted that tweet stating, “It’s likely untrue.” All we do know for sure right now is Blizzcon 2019 will be fun in one way or another.
