Sometimes there are studios and whole companies out there that specifically make games that are not for me. I know this, and I’m not complaining. Bungie is one of them, mostly because of my propensity to tell everyone that multiplayer where you can’t punch someone isn’t my thing. Another company is called Riot Games, as for about ten years they have been tweaking and causing people to talk about a game called League of Legends around me. It is also the series that makes me shout “You wanna know why I hate you, you made this!” when a League of Legends ad plays on YouTube.
Nonetheless, my hatred of those ads aside, I still sit up and listen when these companies announce a new thing. Maybe their new thing could turn my opinion around, it worked for JRPGs when I played a bit of Final Fantasy XV. With that, Riot has announced three new games in the works and an animated series, mostly set in the League universe; better luck next time.
The first project announced is an as-yet-untitled competitive hero shooter codenamed “Project A.” The issue with early development announcements such as this one is the details. At the moment all we know about Project A is the codename and that it is not set in the League of Legends universe, making it the first of the developer’s history. The issue with hearing the competitive hero shooter part is my instant thought of Blizzard’s Overwatch which just released on the Nintendo Switch.
The next game in the alphabet codename is “Project F,” which we can see in the video announcement (linked above). There is no official word on what this will be called, what it is like, or anything else. From the glimpses of the clips that we can see in the tenth-anniversary video, it would seem to me that the champions of League of Legends will be coming to a classic isometric RPG style game. There is no word on whether this will be online or not, and we can only hope there are both single-player and multi-player modes for those that want to play on their own and with friends.
The final game shown was already announced back at the fighting tournament EVO earlier this year. “Project L,” is a 2.5D fighting game set in the League universe with some of your favorite heroes (I’d assume): with Darius, Katarina, and Jinx all shown in the trailer. In the announcement trailer of these games, the team does say that there is still a long way to go in development, so don’t expect any of these soon. However, we could expect more information on Project A next year.
That’s not all. Riot is also making a card game in the League of Legends universe called, Legends of Rueterra. You can register to get access to this one early though the game’s site. One of the main selling points of the game being that you don’t buy packs of random characters; however, you will be buying character cards you want directly.
The team has also been working on an animated series set in the League of Legends universe. Yes, it seems Ubisoft is not the only one putting out announcements of the animated series of their games this week. Once again, the details on Arcane are scarce, though there is a trailer out now (above) which gives fans a chance to pick apart and speculate on every detail.
