It’s customary for online multiplayer games these days to have some big Halloween themed event because everybody loves Halloween. It is Apex Legends‘ first Halloween and it is celebrating with a new limited-time mode.

The new mode, Shadowfall, tosses players into a haunted version of the King’s Canyon map. Initially, the game seems like a solo Apex Legends match. However, when a player dies, they become a Shadow that works under the mode’s announcer, the Revenant. Shadow characters can only use melee attacks, but they’re ludicrously strong and fast. Shadows also have low health and are unable to regenerate them, but they get to respawn at the cost of wasting time dropping back down. In contrast, the Legends regenerate health and shields by killing Shadows.

When the human Legends are whittled down to ten, they are automatically grouped up together to survive against the majority of the Shadows. It’s also at this point that an evacuation ship arrives. For the Shadow team to win, they must either wipe out all the other players or prevent any from getting on the ship, while any Legends that manage to get on win instead. This mode makes for a pretty good diversion from the main game and has a set of challenges for a few Halloween-themed items to encourage playing it.

There is also a unique collection of Halloween stuff up for grabs during the event’s duration. There are costumes like a zombie Lifeline and a jack-o-lantern Bloodhound, along with some spooky looking guns. The problem is that the event’s collectibles run on the exact same system as the Iron Crown event from a while back. Despite massive criticism, the event packs still cost about $7 in Apex Coins.

However, if you just want to get one specific item from the collection, you no longer have to rely on random chance. You can now directly buy or craft one of the Halloween themed items. Epic items cost 1000 Apex Coins or 800 crafting materials, and Legendary items cost 1800 Apex Coins or 2400 crafting materials. While it’s not exactly a perfect fix, seeing as 1800 Apex Coins is pretty much $18, but it at least offers a way outside of predatory gacha.

Unless you want Lifeline’s heirloom, in which case, you need to get all 24 items. At the very least, you don’t need to pay extra to get the heirloom afterwards, unlike Bloodhound’s from the Iron Crown event.

Fight or Fright will be running from October 15th to November 5th. Additionally, playing on October 25th to the 28th will net you double XP if you manage to get in the top 5, so that’s a good a time as any to hop right in.
