Many people are excited about Animal Crossing: New Horizons coming in March of next year. I know for a fact our own Lisa and Alexx are very excited about this one, as am I. However, some fans in Japan got a pleasant experience with one of the characters of the game at the Splatoon concert.

A few games and series have been getting live concerts in recent years, with Ubisoft doing one for the Assassin’s Creed series. Recently the Nier series was announced to have concerts in Chicago, London, and Bangkok. However, Nintendo seemed to be ahead of the curve on this one, with Splatoon‘s Squid Sisters performing live since 2016. Over the weekend, Nintendo also held what’s called “Nintendo Live 2019,” with a live performance of the music from both Splatoon games with performances by the Squid Sisters and Off the Hook.

The stream above was also preceded by a performance by Animal Crossing‘s own musician, K.K. Slider. It was a hologram version of Slider, though it is the first instance of the character showing up for the concerts. Slider performed what seemed to be “an original,” though some speculate it as the theme for New Horizons. Slider then went on to do a portion of the original Splatoon theme, though only a very small portion of it. The live band then went on to play for both fictional pop duos in the Splatoon games, Squid Sisters and Off the Hook. All four represented by holograms themselves.

Hologram performances are not too uncommon now in music with Queen’s Freddie Mercury being apart of the band’s performances 28 years on from his death. In 2006 the British virtual band by the lead singer of Blur, Damon Albarn, and comic book creator, Jamie Hewlett, Gorillaz performed with Madonna at the Grammy Awards. However, in Japan, it is more common for “idols” like the character Hatsune Miku, (of the software of the same name,) to perform live.
