Politics, something many people hate right now. Satire, a thing many people believe to be a word you say then waggle your eyebrows to pretend what was said is a joke. A video game is a series of pictures that you control; a bit like a movie or TV show, but interesting. I like all three of these things; aside from all the eyebrow waggling, and that’s because I am weird. It turns out, I’m not the only one either.
Back in 2013, a very weird wonderful game by Cliff Harris (@Cliffski), founder of Positech, released and it was a political turn-based strategy video game that was quite satirical. Democracy 3 is by far one of my favorite strategy games, it is definitive gaming proof that if I were president of Wakanda, I’d be shot or introduce several world-breaking bugs that kills everyone in minutes. It is not a high action game; unless you annoy the religious people, but it’s a brilliant and simple way of seeing how you’d screw up the country if you had control.
Now, several years later, it seems we’re getting the sequel with several UI improvements. In the image above, you can see the old design of your board of policies; and it looks a little dated now. With the center of the screen featuring all the groups, the top housing your money and extra (scarier) menus, and around the groups sits everything that annoys those people. You could tell the police to carry guns, the equivalent of the NSA to spy on your people a little more, and only teach evolution in schools to annoy people who like a man called Jésus. Below, however, is the new clean style.
“Just when you thought politics had become stale and boring with nothing of interest to report… here comes the sequel to the indie hit of… quite a while ago now (2013). Democracy 4 is releasing its first (not quite finished) screenshot showing the change in style and UI that players can expect when this political strategy game makes a comeback shortly… (TBH we are not sure when).” States the press release by Positech. With a much more detailed note from Cliff Harris in his blog post about it.
I, for one, am excited to see what changes have happened since 2013. As the press release states, “2013 was a very different time in politics: Barack Obama was US president. David Cameron was UK Prime Minister, Angela Merkel was… oh wait…she still is.”
