A few weeks ago when Hyper Light Drifter was part of the Epic Games store weekly deal, I said something about hype and Zelda-likes. I’m not a big fan of either of them, almost to the point of believing the hype can ruin a crowdfunded game such as Hyper Light Drifter. This may be part of the irrational thought that the creative intent of the developer is slightly marred with spending all the money. More money, to some, means that you need to make a bigger game.
Minit is a tiny game that’s quite deep, given it takes from Zelda‘s time-loop mechanics from Ocarina of Time. As the title and Zelda comparison suggest, you have only a minute to solve the world’s problems. At the end of the minute, you die, wake up, and repeat until you’ve solved the world’s plight. For a game that’s only a minute long, the depth carries you for over an hour of tense problem-solving.
The hard thing now, on my part, is trying to convince you of picking up the game right this second if you haven’t already. I’m sure one or two of you read “Zelda-like,” and hulked up ripping your special green tunic. For those of us that aren’t massive Zelda fans, it is gaming in its purest form. With the indie market doing several million retrospectives on games of the 80s and 90s, often building on those concepts; Minit keeps things as simple as possible for its betterment. I don’t want to spoil the game which is why I’m skirting around its gameplay so much.
Minit is available now for free on the Epic Games store until next Thursday, October 10th. This brings us to the next game that will be free on the store. Paradox Interactive and Haeminmont games’ sci-fi city-builder about colonizing Mars, Surviving Mars will be available for free. Next week expect many comments about killing Matt Damon on the surface of Mars with his poo powered potato farms. Surviving Mars will be available between the 11 AM (eastern daylight time) on the 10th until about the same time on the 17th.
