Season 2 of Apex Legends has come to a close. With that, the game has immediately moved into Season 3, with a lot of new things and a new battle pass.
After King’s Canyon was damaged at the start of season 2 and having the contestants play in its ruins, the game runners have moved the arena to World’s Edge. In contrast to the previous map’s desert towns and huts, World’s Edge feels more modernized, with high rises, more overt scientific installations and a train running throughout much of the map. A volcanic section of the map contrasts with a snow covered city, with many of the new battle pass stuff reflecting an ice/fire theme. As for King’s Canyon, it is currently unplayable but is likely to return at a later date.
Joining the contestants is a new one going by Crypto. Crypto is the game’s second recon character and he’s able to deploy a surveillance drone for his active ability. Crypto and his teammates can see whatever the drone detects within a certain radius, though there’s a lengthy cooldown if the drone is destroyed. For his ultimate, Crypto will activate an EMP blast from his drone that damages shields, slows players and destroys traps.
There have also been a whole bunch of balance changes, as expected. One of the biggest ones is that the Executioner skill, a passive for the rare gold armor that rarely gets used, is now a passive for everyone, making it much more useful. The gold armor now instead has the gold backpack’s ability to use consumables in half the time, while the backpack has the ability of giving people extra health and shields upon being revived.
There have also been notable changes for hop-ups. The Disruptor and Skull Piercer rounds have been removed; while the latter’s removal has been compensated by making the Wingman and Longbow guns do more headshot damage, the RE-45 and Alternator gain nothing from the former’s removal. Anvil Receivers have been added that allows players to switch the Flatline and R-301 guns to a semi-automatic mode that does more damage but lowers fire rate. The G7 Scout and EVA-8 can also fire two-round bursts if equipped with the new Double Tap Triggers.
Of course, there’s a new battle pass for players to get rewards as they play as well. Thankfully, Season 3 is retaining the challenge based battle pass the previous season introduced. You can get the battle pass for 950 Apex Coins (or about $10) or you can get a bundle that immediately gives you 25 levels for 2800 Apex Coins (about $30). Along with the usual suite of rewards, players can now get gun charms, which are just little collectibles you can hang on your guns for a personal touch.
