The new Destiny 2 expansion, Shadowkeep, isn’t even out yet, but Bungie is talking about its next project. Somewhat surprising: it’s not Destiny related.
It’s safe to say Bungie is known for two series: Halo and Destiny. The former is a triumph in gaming, and once it got passed on to 343 Studios, the team had already started work on the latter. Destiny has not been the massive hit some assumed it would be, given the success their first space shooter garnished. The game is more loot-shooter than story-driven deathmatch shooter, but it’s still a solid experience. Destiny 2 was meant to be bigger and better than its first entry in the series, and it really never hit that level. The newest expansion, Shadowkeep, is going to be Bungie’s attempt at really solidifying the game as a success.
For the new game, Bungie is keeping a tight lip. Other than a 2025 timeframe, which isn’t as far as it sounds, the developer says it isn’t assuming it’ll work on one sort of game or another. To be honest, it’d be really safe for them to develop another shooter. If you want to flex your creativity, Bungie, it might be time to move into new territory. Of course, that begs the question, what would a non-shooter look like for Bungie? Plus, why change up the formula?
My gut reaction to the news is that they’ll move into a more open-world style RPG shooter. Something a-la Fallout but with more emphasis on combat than customization. Could it be more along the lines of Borderlands with a bit more realism in the mix? Honestly, it’s tough to say. It’s safe to say the ambition is there, and if Bungie can capture some of its trademark magic from past games, a nice change of pace might prove to be crucial for the dev team.
Shadowkeep, the final Destiny 2 expansion, is out October 1st.
