The Switch Lite is less than a week old. The console is great for people who love the handheld aspect of the Switch, but there are some tradeoffs. You can’t connect it to the TV, and you also can’t remove the Joy-Cons. If you don’t plan on collecting a bunch of variants, it might not be a big deal, but now, it looks like there may be a hardware concern.
The Switch received a lot of coverage this year. Most of it has been good, but a big story this summer was Joy-Con drifting. The issue involves analog sticks “ghosting,” resulting in movements that are not player-caused. It’s likely something that comes down to the controller’s construction, but if this video is accurate to the newest Switch console, the issue may also affect Switch Lite owners.

Owners of the original Switch have a bit easier of a time handling drifting. You can send in a Joy-Con for free to Nintendo, although it can take around 8 weeks in some cases to get it back. Nevertheless, it’s possible to send in a Joy-Con and keep playing on your TV with a Pro Controller or other Joy-Cons. With the Switch Lite, that’s not possible. You need to send in the entire console for any issues with the controller portion of the design.
It’s a huge flaw, and is likely something that will get attention if more cases pop up. This could easily be an isolated incident, but given the Joy-Con concerns already brought to light, it’s likely no major changes came to the Joy-Cons on the Switch Lite. It’s no reason to assume Nintendo is going to do a major recall, but it’s worth keeping up with if you’re considering buying a Switch Lite.
