There are some games that you want to experience just as much as you want to play them. Some argue it’s all one and the same for the medium. On the other hand, getting caught up on difficult levels can take you out of the story a bit. Kojima’s recent announcement that Death Stranding will have a Very Easy mode for players who just want to enjoy the story is absolutely genius, and here’s why.
I think back to one of my favorite stories in gaming, Bioshock Infinite. That game’s plot and presentation include some of my favorite moments in gaming. Nevertheless, playing on the game’s highest difficulty made things quite hard. Obviously, that’s the point. There would be times, however, where I’d almost lose track of the story after spending too much time trying to defeat a boss or clear a level. Some argue that struggling to beat a game is part of the experience, but Kojima games are different.
Death Stranding is clearly setting itself up to be more than a video game. Kojima does not make one sort of experience in his creations, and it’s not a stretch to say that visceral experiences are the goal over game mechanics or a complex control system. At the end of the day, players should have the option to play the way they want to play, no matter what the game is. That’s why an easy mode is available, not just for novice players, but for those who just want to breeze through the gameplay and experience the game itself.
In the end, people can argue what they want to argue. For a game like Death Stranding, a Very Easy mode is going to open up the option to get the seemingly confusing story under wraps, then return for a replay on a higher difficulty. It’s a great option for a game with so many question marks lingering after its trailers. Count me in for an easy game experience if it means getting my mind around Kojima’s crazy concoction.
