Telltale Games, makers of popular point-and-click games featuring the Guardians of the Galaxy, Batman, and The Walking Dead, are back. A holdings group formed by video game industry veterans has purchased the assets associated with Telltale Games, bringing the studio back to some sort of life.

When Telltale Games announced they would shut down last year, nobody was that surprised. Before the announcement, the company had fired nearly 250 employees, prepping for a sort of restructure that seemed to be more of a final gasp instead of a breath of fresh air. Of course, major layoffs are common in an industry without proper unionization. It is happening all the time with major developers, as well as game journalism outlets like Game Informer. Overall, the industry is as cutthroat as any popular culture industry. Telltale Games, however, was a surprise victim to the trials of game making.

The developers very much found their downfall to be drastic, given their top-tier status in the narrative-based, point-and-click genre. Telltale didn’t just make great games; they made great games with IP’s like Game of Thrones and Borderlands. Nevertheless, the studio found itself out of money and out of time to figure out a solution. Major layoffs followed, and for an industry as people-centric as video game development, the company followed its’ employee’s exit. Now, a conglomerate of video game industry financiers called LCG Entertainment is buying what’s leftover from the destruction of Telltale. They don’t plan on casually rebuilding the developer; they’re changing their name to Telltale, and going all-in on bringing this studio back.

Many people didn’t think they’d see a day where Telltale was back making games. Employees are currently suing the old execs, and popular game services like GOG are delisting games made by the developer. We’ll have to see how this all plays out before we bet on playing The Wolf Among Us 2 or another Batman series.
