On Wednesday it was revealed by THQ Nordic that they are working on hundreds of projects, have their fingers in every pie, and have acquired several more pies to stick other bits in. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if THQ Nordic (formerly Nordic Games) is now larger than the company they have taken the name and several games of. Earlier this year it was announced they have a German developer, Black Forest Games, and have been remaking Destroy all Humans! Now thanks to a financial report of THQ Nordic’s Q1 2019 earnings, we know what to expect from the company.
We’ll ignore the money because that’s as interesting as learning UK Tax law. The first interesting statement is, “Looking ahead we expect to have at least two major AAA-releases during the next financial year ending March 31, 2021.” This was followed up by the claim that THQ Nordic has 81 games in development with 47 of them unannounced as of yet. To say the very least, that is a metric fecal-matter-based ton of games that one would suspect are to release within the next five or so years, at least.
Deep Silver is one of the biggest contributors to these numbers, owning the publishing rights to several major titles, which are owned by Koch Media in Austria. Koch Media in itself is now owned by THQ Nordic. While that sounds like the conspiracy theory of a mad man, it does mean we have news on Deep Silver projects for the future. First and foremost is Dead Island 2, a game that’s had several hundred developers to this point and now has another to add to the list. Dambuster Studios, developers of the questionable Homefront: The Revolution, are now heading development of Dead Island 2 while in 2012, Yager, developers of Spec Ops: The Line were to develop it.
This was following Techland’s first release of the series, however, later development moved to an unnamed developer. This was later followed by Sumo Digital, developer of Snake Pass, announcing they had control of the IP. Now we’re three years on and Dambuster Studios are giving it a crack since everyone else can’t figure out this Rubik’s cube of development hell.
Nonetheless, Deep Silver have bigger purple phallic objects on the ends of baseball bats to fry. In the report, it states that there is a “full entry” Saints Row in the works by developer Volition. We don’t know if this will be much like Saints Row IV, which started life as an expansion to its predecessor (called: Enter The Dominatrix); or if it will run around crying and laughing like the mental patient that was recently broken up with that was Saints Row the Third. It will be the first full release since 2013, though at this moment there is no timeline for release or name revealed.
We also found out that Fishlabs, developer of the Galaxy on Fire MMO series, is working on a new IP. They also have, “a number of unannounced projects.” This makes it hard to tell you what they could be working on, though given their past one could assume it will be an MMO or mobile/handheld game. One of their most recent titles is Dead Island: Survivors – Zombie Tower Defense for Android.
The last of the big announcements concern Deep Silver’s ownership of the TimeSplitters IP. Steve Ellis, whose LinkedIn states “Secret role at Koch Media/Deep Silver,” is one of the founders of Free Radical (later Crytek UK) and helped develop GoldenEye 007. He also worked on Perfect Dark at Rare before leaving for Free Radical. In the last several years Ellis has founded Crashlabs, now working with THQ Nordic to: “plot the future course for this franchise.”
These announcements are followed by several statements looking back on of the last few months. Amid these statements is the announcements of Darksiders Genesis, SpongeBob – Battle for Bikini Bottom, and Destroy All Humans! Though there are several pieces of information missing from this report, such as the acquisition of Italian developer, Milestone, through Koch Media. Milestone are the developers of MotoGP 19, the motorbike Grand Prix racing series, as well as the Ride and MXGP Pro series.
Others among the acquisition list are: Gunfire Games, developer of Darksiders 3, and investment group, Goodbye Kansas Game Invest. The latter of which (Cision’s PR site news.cision.com ) states: “The acquisition includes a portfolio of minority investments in five early-stage development studios; Palindrome Interactive, Fall Damage, Neon Giant, Kavalri and Framebunker as well as royalty rights to THQ Nordic’s upcoming game Biomutant.”
