Say what you will about the launch of No Man’s Sky. It wasn’t smooth, but updates have made this a great game. Here’s what’s come this time around in the 9GB+ update, called Beyond.
VR Support
Since its’ launch, VR support has been the most requested feature of the game. If there’s a genre of game made for VR, it’s gotta be space explorers. Well, the Beyond update brings the entirety of No Man’s Sky to players in Virtual Reality without compromise. If you want to give it a go, hop into VR and then seamlessly back to standard gameplay. It’s a good excuse to return to old planets and bases.
Expanded Multiplayer
Multiplayer sessions have been around since launch, but now, the Beyond update allows players to accommodate more explorers. The Space Anomaly, those round space stations that pop up in different galaxies, can hold 16 players on all platforms. Throughout the rest of the universe, maximum player counts expand on both console and PC. Playing on Xbox or PS4 bumps from 4 to 8 player experiences, while PC players can now team up in groups of 16.
An Easier Time Getting Started
The game throws a ton at you in the beginning, with lackluster tutorials; but that isn’t an issue anymore. Missions and tutorials have been touched up in the early stages of the game to accommodate a more reasonable learning curve. Mechanics now feel like they’re learned naturally, instead of guessing and wondering if you’re playing the game correctly. Likewise, all the major story points, from the Atlas Path to the Space Anomaly, are now seamlessly connected into a larger story arc. It makes all updates to this point fit nicely together.
There are some further updates to the game in the Beyond patch, including new tech and substances, a social hub, and technology trees. For a full look at the changes in No Man’s Sky, read the full Beyond Update blog here.
