Last month it was announced that Tim Willits would be leaving id Software at the end of QuakeCon, the Bethesda focused convention showing off Bethesda games. In the announcement of his departure, Willits said we’d find out soon what was to come next. At the time I had thought he’d be starting a new studio for another first-person shooter. I also assumed he’d take at least a month to prepare the said studio. I was wrong.
I am excited to announce that on August 1st I became the Chief Creative Officer of Saber Interactive. I will be leading the creative vision of our five studios around the world. pic.twitter.com/rsJ1OsgHkX

In the tweet announcing where he’s been working for the last week and a half, he stated that he’s now the Chief Creative Officer of Saber Interactive. Earlier this year Saber released their game to one of the most boring zombie movies, World War Z. Saber Interactive also have two other games to release this year, a remaster of the 2009 Ghostbusters: The Video Game, and The Witcher 3: Complete Edition for the Nintendo Switch. Saber has also been responsible for 2K’s NBA 2K Playgrounds, a cartoon-like Basketball game; and Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn, a sequel to the 1994 game, Shaq Fu.
In an interview with Fortune published yesterday, Willits said, “Being with a studio for 24 years, it’s really hard to leave,” going on to state, “It’s almost like a marriage, for lack of a better description [… but] I saw how Saber, as a team, was starting to grow and expand and pick up teams and studios. It was a good time to move over.” However, this will not the first time Willits is working with Saber. In 2017, while with id Software, he worked with Saber to produce the free-to-play and multiplayer-focused Quake Champions.
“The agility of small teams and the opportunity to get stuff done quickly can’t be overstated,” said Willits on the operation of the team, “I’m not saying anything bad about Bethesda—I love them—but smaller teams are exciting and fun. When someone has a good idea, we jump on it. If it doesn’t work out, we change it quick.”
With id Software being a studio exclusively focused on the first-person shooter genre and Willits working there for so long, it would be expected of him to continue this. However, Willits states he would like to bring the action and intensity he’s learned from the first-person shooter to new genres. Going on to state, “At my age, you’ve got to work with people you like,” continuing with, “You’ve got to work on fun stuff. I don’t have anything to prove. I’ve been successful. I’ve made good games […] At the end of the day, I’m literally going to travel around the world to cool as places to work with awesome teams and make video games. Why would I pass this up?”
We hope Tim Willits and the entire team over at Saber all the best in their future games, and we can’t wait to see what they bring to us in years to come.
