Made by WayForward and published by Capcom, DuckTales: Remastered is a remaster of Capcom’s classic NES game based on the TV show. While reception on the game is a bit mixed, it’s generally positive and is still a game that holds value to people. So it was a shock when Capcom suddenly announced the game’s removal from storefronts.

Due to Capcom’s licensing deal with Disney expiring, they can no longer legally sell DuckTales: Remastered. On August 8, the game will start disappearing from digital storefronts. “Well, surely we can still buy a physical copy,” you may ask. The issue is that DuckTales: Remastered is a digital-only game, so there’s no other way to acquire the game legally once it’s removed.

The removal of DuckTales: Remastered from digital stores is a reflection of the continual concerns on a digital-only gaming future. Games based on other properties are only held up by licensing rights and when the developers can’t hold onto the rights; those games are doomed to disappear if no physical version exists. An infamous example of this is Scott Pilgrim vs the World: The Game, a successful beat em’ up that was suddenly de-listed. The Alan Wake games were also initially removed from storefronts, due to its use of real music and the developers being unable to hold onto the music licenses; however, they were put back up after publisher Microsoft managed to rework music licensing rights.

Thankfully for preservationists and people that just want to get a crack at DuckTales: Remastered before it disappears, it’s actually currently on sale the Steam store. DuckTales: Remastered is currently 75% off for $3.74 until it disappears. While it’s preferable for the game to not disappear at all, it’s at least nice that it’s available for an affordable cost before it goes away forever.
