A recent comment from EA Andrew Wilson has me confused, and a bit frustrated, with the lack of awareness behind the company’s understanding of the Nintendo Switch.
If you own a Switch, like over 32 million others, you probably notice a severe lack in EA games. While some, like Anthem or the Battlefield series, can’t perform on the Switch’s hardware, others would fit quite nicely. It’s not a lack of desire from Switch owners; or is it? As it turns out, Andrew Wilson is thinking that the problem is exactly that: Switch owners don’t want EA games for their Nintendo console.
Wilson recently said, “any time we’re evaluating platform conversations, we are really looking at a couple of things. One, does the game really fit the profile of that platform in terms of the control or the community ecosystem?” Fair enough. Why put out a game for a console where it’s not going to do well. The only problem is that online, Switch owners are pretty adamant about having more EA titles to play other than FIFA. And on that topic. FIFA for the Switch is severely watered down, and fans still buy it. Why? They want EA games for the Switch.
Wilson went on to say “do we think the community playing on that platform would appreciate the game to go there? Or would they prefer to play it somewhere else?” This is what blew my mind. Wilson equating the Switch as a secondary console to the PS4 or Xbox One might be true in terms of performance. But consider the titles that other companies and developers have ported to the Switch. Things like Doom, Diablo, and Dark Souls Remastered sold incredibly well on the Nintendo console. So let’s be real here.
There’s no lack of desire for EA games on the Switch. If a Madden title came out on the Switch, you’d see a ton of sales. Throw a slightly less visibly pleasing Star Wars Battlefront on the Switch, and it will sell like crazy. The issue here is the effort. Say that you want to focus on the Xbox One and PS4, and people will get it. They might be frustrated, but they’ll get it. Yet this? This is just plain wrong.
