Obsidian’s long awaited Fallout-like, The Outer Worlds, is coming to the Nintendo Switch this October when the game releases.

The Outer Worlds is a single-player sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division, much in the vein of the Fallout series. Lost in transit while on a colonist ship bound for the furthest edge of the galaxy, you awake decades later than you expected only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the Halcyon colony. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter a host of factions all vying for power; who you decide to become will determine the fate of everyone in Halcyon. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.

With early comparisons to games like Fallout: New Vegas, and even Mass Effect, the game is harnessing some hype in the gaming world. Many fans and critics are going so far to call it a spiritual successor to New Vegas, which has become somewhat of a cult classic when Bethesda handed over the Fallout reins to Obsidian in 2010. Early gameplay footage looks a lot like Fallout even, which is not a bad thing. So long as it plays more like Fallout 3 and New Vegas, and less like Fallout 4 or 76.

It’s a bit of a surprise to see The Outer Worlds coming to the Nintendo Switch. To be blunt, the game seems a bit too strong for the output capabilities of the Switch. Of course, there will likely be some scaling down of the graphics, distance draws, and other features. Nevertheless, this game is not going for the 4K visual blockbuster delivery. The game to this point seems to be a love letter to the simplest thrills of New Vegas: great combat, good characters, and an enjoyable over-world.

The Outer Worlds will come out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC on October 25th 2019.
