You’ve probably seen it everywhere on social media. A particularly hard Super Mario Maker 2 level is catching a lot of eyes.

A lot of the online levels of Super Mario Maker 2 are hard, as I noted in my review; but this level? This level is something else. Titled 1-1 But With a Twist, a lot about the level looks familiar. You’ll see the same one block floating over five blocks when you start, but there’s a huge difference: fire. Fire, everywhere. It’s almost overwhelming to the point of laughter, but then you try it. You die, more likely than not, within in the first five to ten seconds. Now, it’s not so funny.

This level is wildly hard, and the fact that it’s uploaded blows a lot of people’s minds. The level itself started turning into a meme, with people pairing the video of the level being completed, seen above, with prefaces like “Me Trying to Handle a Monday” and other jokes. I saw the level get shared by a lot of friends who don’t even play video games, which got me thinking. Mario is certainly special.

There are a ton of people who don’t play video games who have played a Mario game. That’s pretty wild, and points to the cultural level Mario is at. That’s a big reason why Super Mario Maker 2 is a wonderful game. People coming together to play and make levels to such an iconic game feels very interconnected. I get that this isn’t quite connected, but a lot of political and civic life feels very divisive. Something like Mario feels good to enjoy with others.
