Pokémon Go is still up and running, even if you haven’t touched it in three years. Now, Team Rocket and Shadow Pokémon are joining the adventure.
This week, Niantic started rolling out an update bringing two major changes to the game. First, Team Rocket is taking over Poké Stops. It’s not hard to spot these special stops, as a dark purple cloud and large red R will be denoting the trouble. The stops will be home to a Team Rocket owned Pokémon that has been abandoned and is quite aggressive. You’ll first have to battle this Pokémon to fend it off. Then, you will be able to try and capture it.
Shadow Pokémon are going to require less stardust, or experience points for those who don’t play, than normal Pokémon. Likewise, you’ll need less candies, used to evolve your catches, to evolve them to a new form. It’s a huge time saver for those who know the struggle it can be to get 100 candies to evolve popular Pokémon like Charizard, or 400 if you want your Magikarp to turn into a Gyarados.
The update should reach all users by the end of the week, but it’s likely you won’t run into many of these. The likelihood doesn’t have a ratio to its rarity, but users are saying it’s quite sparse. In my experience, I play from my desk at work, dead in the Downtown district of my local city, and I didn’t see a single one today. I did however see a Bulbasaur covered in purple shadow. That was pretty cool.
Niantic is warning rural area players they might need to hunt a bit harder to find one, so it’s likely that you’re going to have an easier time finding one in a more populous, busy area. As always, keep the weather and surrounding areas and people in mind while playing!
