Coming off the heels of the Summer Games, Overwatch has put out a trailer for Sigma, the game’s 31st playable character.

In the lore, Sigma was formerly astrophysicist Siebren de Kuiper, a man that tried to research the nature of gravity. After a freak accident exposed him to a black hole, he suffered psychological damage and gained the ability to fluctuate gravity, leading to him being quarantined under the name “Subject Sigma.” Overwatch’s villainous faction, Talon, managed to break him out, helping him learn how to control his powers; if only to use him as a weapon.

In gameplay, Sigma operates as a tank character that’s rated three stars in difficulty. His primary offensive move fires “Hyperspheres,” orbs that implode on contact or after a short amount of time. Unlike Zenyatta’s orbs, they can bounce off of walls, making them more effective in closed spaces. His other attack, “Accretion,” has him pick up debris and fire it toward an enemy, knocking them back; however, if fired at a farther enemy, it gathers enough momentum to flat-out knock an enemy over. His Ultimate, “Gravitic Flux,” causes him to lift up all enemies in an area into the air and slams them down.

When it comes to tanking, he’s got an unusual mix of abilities. Symmetra’s old shield ability returns in a reworked form as Sigma’s Experimental Barrier. He fires a shield forward and it can be affixed in place until you recall it. As a shield, it acts similarly to Reinhardt in that while it can block a lot of damage, it can only regenerate when it is recalled. Sigma’s secondary tanking ability is “Kinetic Blast,” which mitigates offensive projectiles fired at him and converts damage to temporary shields.

Sigma can currently be played on Overwatch’s PTR servers. For a more in-depth preview, director Jeff Kaplan got on a stream with Overwatch pro-player Brandon “Seagull” Larned to show off this new character.
