Pop culture toy experts Funko are getting into gaming. On top of previously announced mobile titles, they’re launching a strategy board game using popular IPs.

Funkoverse is the name of the series of strategy board games set to launch later this year. Rather than opt to release a single game featuring one set of characters, Funko is doing things a little more their way. Harry Potter, Golden Girls, Rick and Morty, and DC Comics are just a few of the properties set to launch with the company’s first venture into board games.

It’s thrilling to finally share with fans the debut of Funkoverse, the first pop culture infused board game from Funko Games,” Funko CEO Brian Mariotti said this morning following the announcement at Comic-Con. It’s unclear how the games is going to be played specifically, but the setup seems fairly easy.

Funkoverse is going to be for 2-4 players, functioning on two separate teams. The games are listed for ages 10 and up, and the company says each game takes 20 to 60 minutes to play. The photos for the game show dice, markers, and a board. No insight into how to use any of these is being offered at this time.

The pieces are quite literally mini Funko Pop! figures. For those who don’t know, Funko Pop! figures are plastic renderings of pop culture characters and icons with beady black eyes and cartoonish features. They resemble the real people or things from which they get their inspiration, but have a particular feel to them. That feel is likely going to be part of the charm of the Funkoverse line.

Other than board games, Funko is expanding their horizons with two mobile games. One, a 3v3 multiplayer action game, is going to feature a number of IPs Funko has received licensing for, such as Marty McFly and Care Bears. The other is solely focused on Gears of War, and works like a tactical JRPG a la Final Fantasy Tactics or Fire Emblem.
