A new Nintendo Switch is on its way this year. No, it’s not the Switch Lite, announced earlier this month. It’s the base console with a few improvements.
The new Switch model has a few differences from its OG counterpart. For starters, in a very not exciting update the serial number for the new Switch consoles will start with XKW instead of XAW. Why is this important? The older Switch models are still going to be on the market until the new production lines outpace the existing ones. Luckily, you’ll be able to tell a difference from the boxes as well.
These boxes are only slightly different from the original box, but they do differentiate the new models. As you can see, the units come with the original Joy-Con color-waves: grey and neon. If you want a new look for your console, Nintendo is also producing two new colors for Joy-Cons that will release at the same time as the new Switch models. The colors are a Blue and Neon Yellow combo, and a Purple and Neon Orange combo.
The concern with the Joy-Cons follows coverage, including from us here at Phenixx Gaming, about the durability of Joy-Con controllers. Analog stick drifting on the left Joy-Con is well documented to this point, so it will be interesting to see if they come with any changes. Likely, they will not, as no news is pointing that direction.
The new Switch Model, labeled as HAC-001(-01), will have a longer battery life as well. The original Switch runs without a charge for 2.5-6.5 hours in handheld mode. The new model will run between 4.5-9 hours. The new models of the Nintendo Switch will hit stores in August for the North American market, and September in European markets.
