GOG or Good Old Games is known for being second place in the race against Steam as the PC gamer’s go-to stop for video games. Then the Epic Games store came along. Now they sit in a comfortable third place, with a redesign of their storefront with GOG 2.0 as their attempt to reclaim second place. However, what Good Old Games had going for it (before Epic) was curating its library with the strictest of quality control on PC. Though this policy came under fire back in April for being too stringent on indie game titles.
Heaven’s Vault, the second game from the developers of 80 Days, released back in April on both PS4 and Steam PC. However, as a result of the aforementioned policy by GOG, there was no DRM-free release. This was the cause of severe controversy as some avoid Steam and opt for GOG because of DRM policies. Now, Good Old Games users were going to miss out on a title as a result of this stern method of keeping a quality storefront.
Now it seems GOG has backtracked on this policy after seeing the popularity of Heaven’s Vault. In May, Inkle Studios’ co-founder Joe Humfrey had an interview with PC Gamer and said: “We can’t get into specifics, but they gave reasons stemming from their experience playing an early build of the game and what they think their audience wants. Which was definitely disappointing—we had been hoping that GOG’s adventure game audience would embrace Heaven’s Vault, and reaching that audience can make a huge difference to whether or not small studios like ours survive.”
Now, three months from the initial release, GOG’s global communications manager Marcin Traczyk told PC Gamer, “With Heaven’s Vault we’ve changed our mind after checking the final game, how it was perceived by gamers, and receiving numerous requests from our users suggesting to release it.” With that, Heaven’s Vault has finally released onto the platform after many months and many fans requesting it.
