Super Monkey Ball is a Sega franchise that hasn’t had its own game in a while. Not counting a mobile game released in 2014, Super Monkey Ball‘s last platform release was Super Monkey Ball: Banana Splitz in 2012 for the PlayStation Vita. These poor monkeys that roll around in balls have not had a game since… until now.

A feature in an upcoming issue of Famitsu announced that the monkeys are back in Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD.  It is of course, a remake of Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, which released in 2006 on the Wii. Banana Blitz had players use the Wii’s motion controls to go through 100 main levels and 50 minigames. It was received with mixed and positive reviews. While this upcoming HD re-release is coming to Switch, it will also be coming to PS4, Xbox One and Steam, so the motion control mechanics will likely be removed entirely; if not being made optional for the Switch release.

Shortly after news broke, an official site was put up, along with an announcement trailer that’s pretty much just an HD version of the opening cutscene of the game’s main story. A giant pirate monkey has stolen AiAi and friends’ Golden Banana Bunch and this war crime will not stand.

Much like the Super Monkey Ball standard, you’ll be moving monkeys around courses under a time limit. Well, you aren’t moving the monkeys themselves, you’re just tilting the world around them to get their balls rolling around. Wack. Banana Blitz is a bit unusual in that instead of just sticking to courses with the occasional cutscene, it actually has boss battles in the main game to split things up. Still, it is not as drastic a departure as Super Monkey Ball Adventure. If you’re looking forward to more monkey rolling goodness, keep an eye out for when the next Famitsu releases on the 18th for more Banana Blitz HD details and for its release on October 29th!
