I’ve been clear about my thoughts on RPGs and JRPGs in the past. I’ve always thought of them to be kind of boring, slow, ponderous, and other synonyms to say the only grinding I want to do is up and down on a pole, or on my mobile. However, in recent years, I’ve found some of them to be right up my alley. Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Fallout 4, The Witcher 3, Dues Ex, WWE 2K16 & 17, and a few others. Yet none of those are the classic Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game or Wasteland isometric-style RPG.

This week’s free game from the Epic Games store is Torchlight, a more classic RPG with the isometric, dungeon-crawling, and Hack-and-Slash elements. Think of it like Diablo, considering two of the designers of the first two Diablo games, (Max Schaefer and Erich Shaefer) joined the Torchlight team. However, the design of Torchlight came from the mind of Travis Baldree, creator of the 2005 action RPG, Fate. Baldree also worked on the MMORPG Mythos, before Flagship Studios closed down in 2008; handing development and rights off to South Korean developer, Hanbitsoft.

However, the soul of any RPG, to my mind, is the character. Often they are someone you create to show you are different. Here in Torchlight, you’ll receive none of that. You can pick from three classes: The Destroyer, who looks like a version of The Rock before wrestling; The Vanquisher, who is as scantily clad as a chicken breast in the oven; and the Alchemist, Thanos’ cousin who works in Information Technology. The game itself is very much your Diablo style of dungeon-crawler.

As much as I’m sure others might like it, I found the inability to roughly aim at an enemy a little annoying. You have to be precise. However, I’m not here to review the game, I’m here to tell you to pick it up. If you are a fan of older action RPGs (like Diablo), then you’ll surely love Torchlight. Torchlight has been available since yesterday afternoon, and will switch over next Thursday, July 18th. After the 18th it will be $14.99 on the Epic Games store.

Looking forward, however, we move right into the arms of a big black creepy spider. Yes, next week is Playdead’s horrific nightmare, Limbo. Limbo will be available to pick up for free from July 18th to July 25th.
