Victor, a young aristocrat, approaches the lord of Grau Hill manor who claims that he can grant any wish, for a price. Desperate for a cure to a rare disease, Victor chooses to undergo The Pact of Laments at the lord’s mansion. Of course, everything goes haywire as monsters and spirits appear all over the estate. This is a part of Victor’s trial, but for what purpose does it all serve? Why do these nightmares plague Grau Hill?

This game, Lamentum, is currently undergoing a Kickstarter campaign. The campaign is slated to close on July 26th. It is being developed by ObscureTales, a two-person studio, and if the Kickstarter and development go well, it will be released in 2020 on all main platforms.

A quick glance at the game gives the impression of something following in the footsteps of Darkest Dungeon. The official art is evocative of the same art style as Darkest Dungeon, with similar mid-nineteenth century trappings. The difference comes in the gameplay, which looks to be drastically different. Lamentum is a classic horror survival game where you wander around a spooky estate, collecting items to solve puzzles, and finding weapons to fight back against horrors. If you’re not hiding from them, that is.

Victor can waltz right up to an enemy’s face and whack them with a melee weapon or retreat to use a gun with limited ammo. Taking cues from the older Resident Evil games, the amount of times you can save is limited by the amount of ink you can find and inventory is limited. Lamentum wears its inspirations on its sleeve, from the ink to the Dark Souls-esque “YOU DIED” that appears onscreen upon death.

The game’s got some nice looking pixel art going on, made by Fran of the ObscureTales’ duo. The environments are dismal and detailed, while enemies look suitably horrific. Furthermore, on Lamentum‘s aesthetics, the duo is collaborating with Black Light Sound, a small Spain-based composer that’s covering things on the sound front.

The project has a goal of $16,817, which it is almost halfway to meeting. More money would ensure the project’s independence and the Kickstarter itself aims to help create a community around the game.
