In what seems like a never ending sequence of ports, Terraria once again re-releases, this time on the Nintendo Switch.
Terraria is a 2D sandbox game with gameplay that revolves around exploration, building, crafting, combat, and mining. The game has a 3D sprite tile-based graphical style reminiscent of the 16-bit sprites found on the SNES. Terraria is noted for its classic exploration-adventure style of gameplay, similar to games such as the Metroid series and Minecraft. Release of the game dates back all the way to 2011, and PC players have been enjoying it ever since. It has since released for many consoles, including the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and mobile devices. Since its release, the game has sold over 27 million copies.
Re-Logic still makes updates for its successful game. Journey’s End will add more items, mini-bosses a golf mini-game, and a new Master Mode difficulty when it launches for free later this year. The only criticism players have their first go around is the lack of introduction when beginning the game for the first time. It’s not necessarily clear what you should do, or even how to do it. Spoiler-free tutorials on YouTube are always helpful, but it’s great to dive in and explore the game yourself as well.
The game still finds itself releasing on new consoles thanks to its solid gameplay. Terraria was described as a Minecraft clone by various video gaming media outlets when it released, but overall, it feels much different. If you haven’t played it yet, a run through the game is a ton of fun. Due to the mobile nature of the Switch, it is likely to yield great sales for newcomers, as well as repeat purchases by seasoned players. You can pick up the game today on the eShop.
