In this weeks edition of, “What’s free on the Epic Games store?” We have Last Day of June, which is ironically free in the last days of June. Last Day of June is based on the 2013 music video by Steven Wilson, Drive Home. Wilson provided the composition to this 2017 release by Italian developer Ovosonico which was published by 505 Games. So what is the Last Day of June? Well, I’ve had this question in my head for several hours before writing: How do I sell Tim Burton’s version of Up with people that speak like the Minions?
As lovely and heartwarming as it is, I am horrified every time I look into what is meant to be these people’s eyes. It doesn’t help that it has a pace so slow that a tortoise swimming in treacle would be faster and more engaging. Personally, I don’t think Last Day of June is for everyone, and I can’t sell a game to you only on it being free. At the very least I could have tried if I enjoyed my few moments with Last Day of June, however, I didn’t love it instantly. There was something in the lack of brevity that bothered me.
So what is the gameplay of Last Days of June? It is a heavily story-focused, walking simulation through memories, that also allow you to look back on the events that transpired to get you to where you are. However, part of this is that Last Day of June is also a puzzle game in some senses. As you relive your memories, you’ll find some puzzles either to advance the story or lead you in a certain direction. Without outright spoiling the plot, a lot of the focus is upon the carefully crafted narrative.
If you would like to pick up Last Day of June, it is currently free over on the Epic Games store until the 4th of July. Beginning next week, you will be able to pick up Team 17 and Ghost Town Games’ co-op focused cooking simulation, Overcooked.
