I think I’ve made it clear that I think Epic Games are doing a bang up job when it comes to their free games offer on their store, especially in comparison to the Twitch Prime loot. Last week we got one of the most spoken about rogue-lite/likes for the last five years, Enter The Gungeon. That being said, Epic can’t always give away indie sweethearts and triple-A knockouts forever, that would create the issue Twitch Prime is currently in. Yes, this is my nice way of saying, while last week was a delightful surprise to find everyone who was proselytizing Enter The Gungeon‘s great nature, I had never heard of Rebel Galaxy until I was writing the article Thursday.

However, I instantly wanted this week to come as Rebel Galaxy: “is a space Western-styled space trading and combat simulation single-player video game,” according to the Rebel Galaxy Wiki. Yes, please! As I’m sure any sci-fi fan does; I want a single-player Firefly game to putter around in my little ship, creating relationships with aliens, and transporting their space-whiskey. I’ll transport space-anything, or I should say anything, period. However, saying you are a space-trucker isn’t fun, unless you tell everyone you’ll shipping space-sex toys while saying “Full stop!” and “Make it so number one,” in a Picard impression.

Ok, my mild jokes about the joy I’ve had in my short time with Rebel Galaxy aside: What is it really? Rebel Galaxy is a game about being a space-trucker with guns, slowly building up your collection of credits to either upgrade your ship (to take on more dangerous tasks) or buy a whole new ship. In the beginning, you meet with friendly Jabba the Hutt who tells you about his friendship with your aunt. This is where you’ll find you have to go on a scavenger hunt for your aunt who is missing. Jabba or Mr. Hutt then offers to help you get your ship together for the adventure.

Since I’ve only played for about an hour; deciding to take on other missions (A space-trucker has gotta hustle!), I can’t say you’ll find your aunt soon after that or not. However, you will go out to buy some space-whiskey for Mr. Hutt and then fight some other aliens. This is where I think Rebel Galaxy fits well, each mission to take from the many space stations will affect your standing with few alien factions in the galaxy. While I could argue it is fairly more restrictive from a piloting standpoint, I think Rebel Galaxy is the perfect dad game. Rebel Galaxy is a game you know the boring section of gamers (myself included) will sit in for hours doing remedial tasks because it is relaxing.

Rebel Galaxy is available now for free over on the Epic Games store until the 27th. However, we will also look forward to the last few days in June, as next week we will be talking about, Last Day of June, available on June 27th.
