Lucah: Born of a Dream, a hidden indie gem of 2018, is going to get a Nintendo Switch port on July 3. It is a character-action game about finding oneself, inspired by the likes of Bayonetta and Dark Souls, set in a world of chaotic drawings.

I previously reviewed Lucah on my personal site last year and it was a game that I really enjoyed. I consider it to be in the top 3 new releases that I played last year, which includes Hitman 2 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It stands on a list of 250 “Hidden Gems” on Steam and currently enjoys a “Very Positive” rating on Steam.

However, the gaming world has not been kind to the game, through no fault of its own.  The game was hit hard by discover-ability issues due to Steam algorithm problems. Along with Wandersong and other games, Lucah, for a time, wasn’t considered a real game by Steam’s algorithm. While this system of checking to see if a game was real or not was done to combat an epidemic of “fake games” on Steam, the process being automated led to a bunch of legitimate games being marked as such.

When a game isn’t considered real, Steam limits the number of achievements, and prevents achievements from adding to a user’s global achievement count. Additionally, fake games don’t have trading cards available, deterring users obsessed with Steam Trading Cards to get into the game. Users are also unable to display anything from a fake game on their profile, which also cuts down on their ability to publicly show the game off. While the false-positive problem was ruled to be a glitch and Wandersong was cleared of its issues, Lucah had to deal with it for longer.

However, the upcoming Nintendo Switch port can give Lucah: Born of a Dream another shot at success. Though the Switch has discover-ability issues of its own, the new platform provides a new audience that can embrace the game. It doesn’t hurt that Nintendo put the announcement trailer on its own channel.
