I’m sure we all remember those silver PlayStation 2 cases that would always say, “Platinum” along the bottom of the box, under the game’s usual cover art. Then you had the PS3’s same idea with silver boxes, a yellow trim, and the word platinum along the top. We also had “Essentials,” for both the PSP and PS3, though none on the Vita because no one made games for that system. For a long while, you’d find the cream of the crop here: Need for Speed Carbon, Spider-Man 2, Ratchet and Clank, Devil May Cry, and of course, Burnout 3.
This generation hasn’t really had this cream of the crop status, in all honesty, it is hard to say this console generation started talking before we saw the ultrasound of what Microsoft is calling, Project Scarlett. No matter how little stands out this generation, there have been some that have clutched some praise out of the otherwise wheezing mess that is the 8th generation. Nonetheless, Sony is continuing the trend of special boxes and cheaper prices.
It turns out I already enjoy parts of the “PlayStation Hits” range, mostly in a prenatal capacity. However, it seems the range is getting a little bit bigger. Five games were announced to join the lineup as of yesterday. Recently the lineup got the addition of Lego Batman 3, Lego Jurassic World, Star Wars Battlefront (2015), and Persona 5. Yesterday’s extension to the collection added the critically acclaimed Resident Evil 7, Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition, followed by Nioh, God of War 3, and Friday the 13th of all things. An eclectic bunch for sure.
This brings the grand total of games in the PlayStation Hits range to 41 games, some more questionable than others. While I could agree that Mad Max, Doom, Bloodborne, as well as both Yakuza 0 and Kiwami qualify as hits; It is strange to see things like Battlefield Hardlines, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, the highly questionable inFamous: Second Son, and the aforementioned Friday the 13th.
I have to say, this seems like the perfect time to join the Persona 5, Bloodborne, Yakuza, or any other bandwagon of praise. At the $19.99 MSRP none of these games are anything to grumble at. Though I would like to point out a piece of consumer advice, this past weekend I had bought Bloodborne for only $12, second-hand.
