Nintendo has made multiple attempts in the mobile game space, releasing bite-sized limited versions of their own IPs and churning out gacha games. Continuing this trend, the company has recently put out a trailer for their latest outing, Dr. Mario World.
The core of Dr. Mario World is the same as Dr. Mario, with you lining up pill segments to similarly colored viruses to eliminate them. However, Dr. Mario World diverges from the formula in multiple ways. The playing field is turned upside down with pills floating up and instead of accidentally filling your screen with capsules, you have to avoid running out of a limited number of capsules in stage mode. Each level has prearranged viruses and structures, with helpful objects on the playing field like shells that will help you clear the board.
Of course, you have to remember; this is a mobile game. For one, everything is touch controlled. You drag pills into the playing area and tap them to make them rotate or drag them to make them move quickly. Another thing to look out for is the usual fake longevity and micro-transactions mobile puzzle games have. Playing levels spends hearts, and if you run out, you have to wait a while. However, you can also buy diamonds through micro-transactions to refill your hearts or to buy special items to make playing easier. It’s your standard mobile puzzle game stuff and it unfortunately comes with the territory.
Dr. Mario is not alone in this new fight against viruses. Using either in-game coins or diamonds, you can get other familiar Mario faces… except as doctors. Each doctor has their own special ability; Dr. Peach can clear a random column while Dr. Mario can clear a row. Now, maybe it’s because the trailer doesn’t fully show it off, but it seems like the game chooses what doctor you get at random, which is a bit lousy.
What hasn’t been properly elaborated on yet is the Versus Mode, which is only briefly detailed on the official website and alluded to in the trailer. It promises that players can fight each other in one-on-one fights. It’s possible that this is just going to be a screen-flipped version of the classic Dr. Mario we’re familiar with instead of the stage-based gameplay, but for now it’s unknown. Characters seem to have separate skills in versus mode, if that’s what the doctor portion of the trailer alludes to. Dr. Mario World will come out on July 10 with five playable worlds for iOS and Android, with more planned in the future. Pre-registration is currently open.
