The first major downloadable content pack for NetherRealm’s recently-released Mortal Kombat 11 has been announced, and some new details about it have recently come to light. This pack, known as the “Kombat Pack,” lists on its Steam store page that it contains six new characters who will be released over time, as well as seven exclusive character skins, and seven exclusive sets of gear. Players who purchase the pack will also be able to access each DLC character one week early. This applies to other platforms as well.

The asking price for the pack is currently $40. I personally think that might be just a bit steep, but I’ll discuss my thoughts on that shortly. For now, I’ll discuss which characters have been listed to be included in the Kombat Pack, who’s been speculated to be part of it, and throw in my two cents for those of you who might want to know what I think of this DLC.

A recently-released trailer for the Kombat Pack, which has since been uploaded to various YouTube channels and media outlets, mostly highlights the inclusion of series staple Shang Tsung and showcases some aspects of his gameplay. At the end of that video, however, we’re presented with a list of three more characters slated to appear in the pack.

Namely, those characters include two series regulars in the forms of Nightwolf and Sindel, as well as Todd McFarlane’s character, Spawn. I suspect most of you will remember that Spawn’s purported inclusion in Mortal Kombat 11 would constitute his second guest appearance in a fighting game. His first appearances, of course, was in the original Xbox version of SoulCalibur II.

So, that’s four characters out of six purported to appear in the Kombat Pack. As you might imagine, rampant speculation about who the remaining two characters might be has taken certain corners of the Internet by storm.

For example, you might have heard that the character Ash from the Evil Dead franchise has been tapped to appear in the newest Mortal Kombat title. However, the man most well-known for portraying Ash, actor Bruce Campbell, has both outright denied and apparently teased Ash’s inclusion in the game. The idea of Ash being playable in MK11 is exciting to me, but it seems the question of his inclusion may well still be up in the air.

Honestly, considering NetherRealm’s history of including well-known guest characters in their fighting games, hardly any character I can think of would surprise me if they were slated to appear in MK11.

If you consider yourself a fan of the Mortal Kombat and/or Injustice franchises, I’m sure you’re as familiar with each game’s guest characters as I am. NetherRealm has made some rather unorthodox, yet generally well-received, selections in regards to guest fighters.

NetherRealm has somehow managed to include in their games such characters as Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees (though sadly not both of these in the same game), Leatherface, two characters from the Alien films, God of War’s Kratos, Hellboy, and even the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. As I said, given the length and significance of that list, hardly any character NetherRealm might seek to include would catch me off-guard at this point.

I mentioned at the beginning of this article that I think the forty-dollar asking price for this particular Kombat Pack might be a bit on the steep side. Then again, I haven’t really had the time just yet to sit down with Mortal Kombat 11 and really sink my teeth into it.

Because of that, I can’t be sure whether I think the Kombat Pack is a worthwhile purchase until I rectify the issue that is my lack of time spent with the game. Of course, I’m not exactly hyped for the cosmetics included in the pack. I consider myself a “function over form” type of person in most situations, including when it comes to fighting games.

I am, however, curious enough about who its two currently-unrevealed characters might be, so I might buy it regardless. Granted, I don’t mean to say that the last two characters constitute a make-or-break ultimatum as to whether or not I buy the pack. Rather, if I know those final two fighters well and/or might enjoy playing them regardless of who they are, that would certainly more effectively tempt me to spend the forty dollars on the Kombat Pack.

On the other hand, players like myself who are unsure whether dropping that kind of money on a DLC pack is worthwhile might be able to ease their minds if NetherRealm allows players to purchase each DLC character individually, as they did with Injustice 2. That way, players can opt to only purchase the fighters they want to play, rather than being stuck paying more for characters and cosmetic items which might not interest them.

To conclude, as I said a moment ago, I haven’t yet spent enough time with Mortal Kombat 11 to have experienced much of the game’s offerings outside of the single arcade mode ladder I played when last I had time.

Due to that, I think I’ll need to spend more time with the game and determine what I like and dislike about it before I can judge any aspect of the Kombat Pack. For now, I’ll just exercise cautious optimism and hope to see that the Kombat Pack adds enough to the game that I won’t regret buying it.
