When Hideo Kojima announced that he was leaving Konami, fans were confused and wondering what would come next. Well, the answer to that is a game called Death Stranding, and it’s a head scratcher in the best way.
Death Stranding finally has a release date: November 8 for PlayStation 4 consoles. The news came at the end of the most revealing “gameplay” trailer for Death Stranding yet, running over 8 minutes and truly answering fewer questions than it poses. We see the main character Sam, played by Norman Reedus, exploring a strange open-world filled with mysterious creatures. We see him riding a motorbike and, (separately,) being attacked by some of the world’s monsters. Elsewhere he wields an assault rifle to retaliate against attacks from what appear to be demons.
A lot of what we know is conjecture, but here’s what seems certain. America is not what it once was, as a character mentions during the trailer- “No, America is finished … We don’t need a country. Not anymore.” The country, after being threatened by poison rain and demons running wild, seems to have forced everyone into seclusion. Sam’s job is connect these walled-off communities to one another once again. There also seems to be an ongoing conflict with a militant separatist group that wields special powers. In terms of gameplay, we see Sam engaging with enemies in third-person melee combat with stealth elements. This seems familiar, given Kojima’s Metal Gear series.
In Kojima’s own words, “As Sam Porter Bridges, you will attempt to bridge the divides in society, and in doing create new bonds or ‘Strands’ with other players around the globe. Through your experience playing the game, I hope you’ll come to understand the true importance of forging connections with others.” This game is hitting on all cylinders, and we haven’t even gotten our hands on it. Between the deep metaphors and gripping combat we love from this once-in-a-lifetime content-creator, this game can’t come soon enough.
There are a few options for when the game finally releases. The special editions of the game include the Collector’s edition, Digital Deluxe edition, and Special edition. The Collector’s edition is the big highlight, coming with a cargo case, “life-sized” BB pod statue, and a ludens keychain, along with in-game content.
