Yesterday The Pokemon Company streamed their Pokemon Press Conference live from the Shibuya district in Japan, and oh boy there were definitely some unexpected announcements, to say the least. in the roughly 40 minute conference, we received so much news, but at the same time, it fell a little flat.
With everybody talking about the greatness that is the Detective Pikachu movie. It only makes sense to talk about the adorable electric mouse’s shenanigans to start off the conference. This came with an announcement for a sequel to Detective Pikachu that will continue the ending to the original Nintendo 3DS game. No more details were given at the time of writing.
The next big announcement was that of a new online service called Pokemon Home. Similarly to Pokemon Bank on 3DS which allowed you to carry Pokemon caught from Gameboy Advance titles up to DS titles to the 3DS versions of the game. Pokemon Home, however, will enable players to not only bring the Pocket Monsters from older entries but will also include the new entries in the Pokemon franchise Sword, Shield, both the Let’s Go games and even Pokemon GO. Pokemon Home will also include trading across all platforms at some point after it’s initial early 2020 launch.
Moving on to what is probably one of the most bizarre announcements in Pokemon History is the reveal of Pokemon Sleep. Pokemon Sleep is an initiative to encourage healthy habits like Pokemon Go before it. I will refer to it as “Sleep” from here on out just to stay away from the monotony of repeating myself. “Sleep” will reward you for healthy sleeping habits, not much else was really shown off besides how the game will be tracking your sleep. Nintendo then came out on stage to show off the new companion app to Sleep and Pokemon Go, the Pokemon Go++. Pokemon Sleep will launch at some point in 2020.
The Pokemon Company also gave us one more announcement and that was the spin-off game DeNA and Game Freak have been collaborating on and that is the new mobile game, Pokemon Masters. Pokemon Masters will allow players to play alongside iconic Pokemon trainers like Misty, Brock, Blue and even Cynthia. We saw a short little gameplay trailer that showed that the battling will be three vs three and it seemed to still be turned based combat. Pokemon Masters is due out sometime this year and we will receive more details later on in June 2019.
