Back in 1996, the world was introduced to George R.R. Martin’s masterpiece A Song of Ice and Fire: A Game of Thrones. Now, nearly twenty-three years and five books later, George R.R Martin has finally given a more concrete release window of mid-2020 for the sixth book in the franchise The Winds of Winter.
Mr. Martin has made a post over on his Not a blog site stating that, “But I tell you this — if I don’t have THE WINDS OF WINTER in hand when I arrive in New Zealand for Worldcon, you have here my formal written permission to imprison me in a small cabin on White Island, overlooking that lake of sulfuric acid, until I’m done. Just so long as the acrid fumes do not screw up my old DOS word processor, I’ll be fine.”
Worldcon is to take place in New Zealand from July 29th, 2020 to August 2nd, 2020 so hopefully by then, George will finally hit his deadline after a few previous delays of the much anticipated sixth novel. George first believed he would finish The Winds of Winter in 2017, six years after A Dance With Dragons but he delayed to 2018 along with the Fire and Blood (a complete history on house Targaryen), which proceeded Winds of Winter.
Back in February of 2016, George R.R. Martin said, “I am not writing anything until I deliver WINDS OF WINTER. Teleplays, screenplays, short stories, introductions, forewords, nothing. And I’ve dropped all my editing projects but Wild Cards.”
George R.R. Martin has been infamous for his slow and often times methodical writing process. He has been criticized by fans, but I would rather have a good quilty story that I can obsess over for weeks, than a bloated lifeless book that I would give up on days later.
